Integrated Ocean Observing in Support of Coastal and Climate Resilience

Henry Ruhl is the CeNCOOS Director. CeNCOOS ( Central California Ocean Observing System) is one of eleven regions that contributes to the national U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS). The regional observing systems work to collect, integrate, and deliver coastal and ocean observations in order to improve safety, enhance the economy, and protect the environment. As such, CeNCOOS is US Government-accredited, regional source for high-quality data, integrated information, and diverse expertise to inform wise and sustainable use of the ocean off Central and Northern California. The EOS Center hosts one of the fixed stations (on the EOS Pier) that contributes monitoring data to CeNCOOS.

Henry became Director in 2018. He was an MBARI Postdoctoral Fellow (2006-08) and then an adjunct researcher at MBARI from 2014. Before MBARI, he was Head of the DeepSeas Group, and Associate Head, Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystems Group, National Oceanography Centre, UK since 2010, and prior worked as a Research Scientist (2008-10), also at the National Oceanography Centre. Henry earned his PhD in Marine Biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
