Dr. Anne Simonis is an acoustic ecologist and oceanographer, working as a research affiliate with NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service. Her research explores marine mammal acoustic behavior, foraging ecology, and human impacts, including ocean noise and fishery interactions. In addition to her research, she co-leads a research program for high school students, using a combined approach of virtual and in-person instruction to support investigations into passive acoustic monitoring, oceanography, and marine mammal ecology. Anne is passionate about improving youth mentoring programs, forming connections between researchers and the greater community, and getting authentic data and science practices into classrooms. Anne previously worked as a Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the National Academies of Sciences’ Board on Science Education. She has published in many peer-reviewed journals, including Marine Ecology Progress Series, the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Marine Mammal Science, Fisheries Research, and Endangered Species Research. Anne received her PhD in Oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 2017.
