Dear Friends of the Estuary & Ocean Science Center,
I’m very sad to say that SFSU has started the process of shutting down the Estuary & Ocean Science Center / Romberg Tiburon Campus. The doors are closed as of the end of September. As you know, SFSU has been saying for years that they can no longer afford to operate the RT campus, with continued declines in enrollment at the university. The 53-acre site, with all its deferred maintenance, was required to become fully self-supporting. Unfortunately, maintenance and operation funds have been very difficult to find, even as grant funding has grown for our projects, programs, and student training.
I am so grateful for the support of our Friends through the years. Please stay tuned for what we hope will be an exciting re-emergence of San Francisco Bay’s marine lab. It may have another name or even be at another place, but we fully intend for it to live on.
