Welcome to the Estuary & Ocean Science Center! We are a research and service organization of San Francisco State University, located on the Romberg Tiburon Campus in Tiburon, CA. We have a rich history of marine research, education and discovery dating back nearly 40 years. We were launched in 2017 by the Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies, at the same time the campus was renamed the Romberg Tiburon Campus, one of the initial steps of implementing our new strategic plan.
The Estuary & Ocean Center (EOS Center) supports scientific study of the sea, enhances public engagement with marine science and develops solutions to the environmental problems confronting coastal communities. We connect science, society and the sea through outstanding interdisciplinary research, education and outreach programs to train the next generation of scientists and sustain healthy and resilient coastal ecosystems for future generations. Learn more about the EOS Center.
The EOS Center welcomes students and scholars from SF State, and elsewhere, to study and conduct research at the only marine laboratory located on the shore of San Francisco Bay. We are a gateway for scientific study of the extraordinary diversity of marine and coastal ecosystems nearby including the San Francisco Estuary and its tidal marshes and eelgrass meadows, and the sandy beaches, rocky shores, esteros, lagoons and open ocean ecosystems just beyond the Golden Gate.
We support SF State departments that offer courses or conduct research related to marine and coastal environments and related topics through our specialized facilities and meeting rooms. The EOS Center is proud to be the home of SF State’s innovative new MS program in Interdisciplinary Marine and Estuarine Sciences, offered through the College of Science and Engineering. We offer a diversity of research and educational opportunities through the SF Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) program and our partnership with the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, both co-located with the EOS Center on the SF State Romberg Tiburon Campus.
We collaborate with community organizations, K-12 educators, governmental science agencies and industry in collaborative research, K-12 science education, workforce development, and business incubation programs related to marine and coastal environmental science and technology.
The EOS Center is also home to the Barbara & Richard Rosenberg Institute for Marine Biology & Environmental Science. The Rosenberg Institute sponsors high impact, public science programs including a twice-yearly Public Forum series, a weekly science Seminar Series, and an annual Discovery Day open house. We hope you will join us for these informative and engaging events!
I invite you to join us in our work by making a gift to the EOS Center. With your gift, we can support more student and community access to our marine and environmental science programs. Visit our giving page to learn about how you can make a gift.
